hey Reader

Instagram just dropped 3 new features:

  • Reposting (yep, like a built-in regram giving credit to original poster)
  • Instagram Maps
  • Reels your friends liked

But here’s the one I want you to pay attention to today: Instagram Maps.

Why? Because it can share your location with others—and you might not even realize it’s on.

I found this article that breaks down how the feature works and how to protect your privacy → Techcrunch article

And I made a quick Reel showing extra settings you can tweak so you’re not accidentally sharing your whereabouts → Watch the reel

Here’s how to turn off Instagram Maps inside the app:

  1. Tap Messages in the top right of your Feed.
  2. Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
  3. Tap Settings (top right).
  4. Choose No one to keep your location private, or customize who can see it.
  5. Tap Update to save.

How to stop Instagram from getting your location on your phone:

  • iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Instagram → Select “Never.”
  • Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Permissions → Location → Select “Don’t allow.”

For business owners:
If you’ve got a location on your profile, it’s usually just the city—unless you added your exact address. You can remove or edit it under “Edit Profile” → “Public Business Information” or “Business Contact Info.”

Take 2 minutes to check this now. The update is fresh, and it’s better to make sure your settings match what you want to share.

Stay safe online,
Prathi
